Zones can be set up to detect the entry or exit of a tracker to or from a particular place defined by either a circular or a polygon shaped zone set by the user. The tracker crossing its boundary in either direction can lead to an alert SMS or email message to up to 3 contacts defined in the Admin page. Up to 4 zones are possible.
How it works: When a tracker sends a new position report, the server calculates whether it is inside or outside any zones that are active, to any contacts in the Admin panel who have "Fence Alerts" selected. The alert doesn't happen until a position report meets the criteria of leaving or entering so the alert can be quite "late" if a long time interval has been chosen by the user. If a device has left or entered a zone, it will not be "detected" until the next position report is sent. When setting the time interval between reports, bear this in mind.
Zones: This allows for the setting of up to 4 zones (Geo-Fences) which Users can set to trigger an alert if/when the device enters or leaves (or both) a zone. Thus zones can be centred on a house to protect for example a parked car, or around a marina to protect a boat. The size (diameter) of the circular zones can be adjusted using a slider control. The position of the zone's centre is located by clicking a location on the map, creating a red "X". Their diameter should 500m minimum to avoid false alerts.
To set a zone press the "Zones" button and press "add zone" (circular zone) or "add polygon" (multi-sided zone)
Add Zone: Creates a circular zone that needs a unique name, and to have its size set with the size slider, the position of its centre is set by clicking on the map. Check the tracker ID in the Right hand panel to make the zone active for particular tracker(s). If there is just one tracker, its checkbox gets checked automatically selected on Save. Remember to enter 1-3 mobile phone numbers or email addresses for SMS/email alerts in the Admin panel and check the "Fence Alert" box for each contact as appropriate. Select checkboxes for Entering / Leaving or leave both unselected to suspend but not delete the zone, then press Save. Phone numbers must be mobile phone numbers with a leading "+" then country code +353 (e.g. for Ireland). Drop the leading zero and any spaces for each number e.g. +353869876543.
Add Polygon: Creates a multi-sided shaped zone that also needs a unique name, by clicking the mouse (left) button n times on the map sequentially. The enclosed area is the zone. It size should be larger than a critical space to allow for and avoid edge false alerts. Check the tracker ID in the Right hand panel to make the zone active for it. Remember to enter 1-3 mobile phone numbers or email addresses for SMS/email alerts in the Admin panel and check the "Fence Alert" box for each contact as appropriate. Deselect checkboxes for Entering / Leaving or leave both unselected to suspend a zone, then press Save. Phone numbers must be mobile phone numbers with a leading "+" then country code +353 (e.g. for Ireland). Drop the leading zero and any spaces for each number e.g. +353869876543.
Remember to select the tracker or trackers to which the zone pertains. If no tracker has been selected the zone is effectively OFF. This is a convenient way of de-activating a zone without deleting it. When finished adding zones close dialog.
Alert messages arising are brief and identify the zone name and whether the alert is associated with Entering or Leaving it.
Zone size: To avoid false alarms, it is important to make zones large enough, so as to allow for the relatively large potential error in location when first turned on, or when making a report after a long period (more than 20mins) since its last location report. This is especially true where the GPS signal strength is low or where surrounding trees and buildings are a factor. Consequently, zones should be set around a street rather than a house, or around a farm rather than a farm building, etc. There is very little inherent advantage in making zones small, which has the potential disadvantage of "false alarms".
Zone alerts: It is important to realise that zone alerts lead to SMS or email messages based on the contact details specified in the Admin panel. If no numbers, or invalid numbers have been entered, there will not be an alert. The Tracking panel (Windows/MacOS) doesn't show zone alarms in the way that motion alerts are shown. Consequently, there needs to be at least one contact number in the Admin panel with the "Fence alerts" option checked. Up to four zones can be created concurrently. Zones can be altered - edited or deleted following their creation, but oddly they cannot be re-named - they need to be deleted and re-created with a different name. The Tracking panel - Mobile doesn't show either zone or motion alerts.
Alert responses: The contact details listed to receive alert messages need to be informed and possibly given instructions on what they're supposed to do if/when they receive an alert. This is obviously important for safety. It is important for alert recipients to be shown how to use at least one of the 5 user interfaces to review current and History position report information. Some preparatory discussion and training of contacts is strongly recommended.
